The Inspiration

A newspaper is an integral part of modern life. Usually, people like to read them to stay informed about technology, business, and their local city, state, or country.

School going children are active consumers of information and knowledge. They go to school to acquire knowledge. They read textbooks to acquire knowledge. They talk to friends and family to acquire knowledge.

The newspapers are a great source of updated knowledge. Yet, we can not recommend children to start reading an ordinary newspaper because it contains a lot of sensational news that might adversely affect their tender minds. The Newspapers contain news of terrorism, murders, accidents, theft, and many other negative stories. Many newspapers do biased reporting due to political and business affiliations. These negative and biased stories make a long-lasting adverse effect on the minds of children. It may hamper their critical thinking and creative thinking skills, which are essential skills to survive in the 21st century.

We can try to protect our children from this harmful content, but actually, we can not. They get misinformed overtly or covertly by friends, family, strangers, and all invasive media.

At the same time, the National Curriculum Framework 2023 recommends active utilisation of newspapers/magazines for children’s linguistic development. It finds textbooks insufficient to instil reading, writing, and speaking ability in children. Even NCERT books contain clips of newspaper articles for discussing many contemporary social, environmental, scientific, and political issues.

When we asked students why they don't read newspapers, they simply answered that newspapers are boring to read, difficult to understand, and not useful for exams.

After researching for a long time and working with students, we have crafted a newspaper, especially for school-going children which resolves all the above issues.

Student Edge is a children's newspaper that is not boring, not difficult, and useful for the academic and non-academic growth of children. Student Edge is designed in a colorful format to bring joy to the face of children. Student Edge is written in a simple language with easy background information to make it a feast for the curious mind. The content is mostly positive. Difficult news items like political issues are presented in a balanced way with information to bring concepts to light and subside the hate behind it.

All news items are selected based on the future needs of children and aligned to the concepts included in their curriculum. Most of the news items are tagged with the Class and Subject to show our claim.

Each news item also carries worksheets to help students assimilate and master the concept involved.

We hope the Student Edge will improve students’ linguistic competence and result in better academic competence, critical thinking, creativity, and curiosity.
